Long time no see friends! I am just stopping in to wish you a fantastic holiday and to let you know that I will soon reside (along with the usual Monkey features and other goods) at misterboffin.com, the collaboration between myself and Ian. May you come visit and may you have a marvelous and memorable end to 2011.  

For the next few weeks, we'll be eating a few too many croissants and tapas here and here.

Hello friends-

After much consideration, I have decided to take Monkey in LA in a direction much more aligned with my philosophy: to be clearly cognizant of my own impact on our shared planet—particularly by making recommendations. Sure I love design-forward, "pretty" things, but it's worth it to properly dig a bit further and share goods I can truly stand behind. Come 2012, I'll be bringing you Gift Guides, Monkey Style and others (plus some new features) with a citizen global/local spin (greenwashing not included). I may pop in with a Swell Sip around the holidays or a couple of snaps from Paris (whether here or on Instagram), but until then, I'll be taking a break to spend time with Colette (with yogurt on her face) and the rest of the brood.

This week's SWELL SIP is an ode to and collaboration with Ms. Shannon Eileen, the beauty and brains behind Happiness Is, a blog of good things and her labor of love that brings her musical life in Seattle to life for us all. I am sure that you have probably laid your eyes upon La Corde a Linge at some point with all of the adoration going around for this 1930's laundry-turned-restaurant in Strasbourg, France. I mean, of course people love it! Just look at the petit clothes hanging from the line! And since it's so sweet and I can't currently catch a wink of sleep in anticipation of my French holiday, I thought I would share the obsession by giving you a little look into this enchanting eatery.

Space Monkey: Maison Couturier

Given a guess, you'd probably never think that Maison Couturier, with its French name and 19th century history, is actually a hidden estate in Veracruz, Mexico. That is, until you see photos of the outdoor pool and grounds which are ever basked in the warmth of the sun.  While inside you may enjoy a lovingly cooked meal or a quiet read in a rocking chair, outside you can swim in the stone pool and munch on freshly-picked fruit from the region. With such charm and detail, its no wonder that it was restored by the same guys who own the aforementioned Hotel Americano. What an eye they have, no?

In  Japan, United Arrows is no obscure brand, but their Fall/Winter 2011  Portrait is thoughtful and leans towards exaggerated and cheeky— so it  feels fitting to give it mention so close to Halloween. And so indeed the weekend did take us to an orchard and through the rolling roads of Oak Glen looking for apples. What did we find? Apple butter, apple donuts, apple pie, apple cider. . . oh, and a raccoon named Claire. Sure, we rolled back down the hill, but as far as autumnal adventures go, it was pretty unbeatable. Japanese designers + Scandinavian influence + French store= Neest. Once I came upon this petit online and brick and mortar shop, I marked in on my list for when I'm in France over the holidays. Something about the back-to-basics but with rich materials approach by contributing artisans makes you want to jump through the screen and peruse about. Their blog, chalk-full of sweet cat photos, other little must-sees in Paris, plus ways to incorporate Neest offerings into your decor, is simply swell. Check it out here.

Space Monkey: Tipsy Parson

Tipsy Parson is cheeky like Ouiser Boudreaux (I mean with a name like Tipsy Parson...), welcoming like Ruth Jamison, with a city sensibility and a lot of character. In short, it's a charming eatery you'll want to wake up on a Sunday for due to their delicious Southern goodies like Pecan Sticky Buns and Fried Green Tomatoes perfect for sharing with friends like the lovely Mr. Kornegay (because he's a fabulous Southern gentleman, of course). With its whimsical walls covered in plates and book wallpaper, weathered wooden tables and a verdant garden, it's the kind of place that makes me wish I lived in New York. Maybe just one weekend a month. Only in spring or fall. And only if I could eat here and at Buttermilk Channel each and every time.

Slowly but surely, the former glory of downtown is being restored piece by piece and if you follow my night out, you can taste for an evening how simply grand it can be. This is a STAY IN  meant to transport you to a different era in Los Angeles, where the time was as rich as any other gilded city and the lights burned low with a bit of mystery, a bit of magic and a lot of good fun. But just remember, don't get too splifflicated and take any wooden nickels now, you hear? 

EAT: Sitting at 15 stories above Pershing Square in the aptly named Pershing Square Building, Perch is a majestic eatery where you can experience the 1920s history of the building. With arched windows, a prime terrace and a menu that is a throwback to the Jazz Age, feed yourself well with the Perch au Noisette (perch in a butter bath with spring peas and tomato carpaccio), an Apple Tart Napoleon and a French 64 Cognac.  

DRINK: Tucked away in the back of Cole's, The Varnish is a true speakeasy where the drinks are taken seriously and the art of conversation is king. Sitting in one of the dimly-lit booths, you can order up a drink based on your taste whether you're feeling a bit lemony, a bit dark and stormy or if you want, let the bartenders to take the lead and whip you up something special. 

STAY: Occupying the 10th-12th floors of the 131-year-old Los Angeles Athletic Club, the hotel is gloriously decorated in rich grays and warm browns with leather chairs that beckon you to cozy up and beds as big as some New York City apartments. But the real gem of staying here is getting to spend a Sunday taking a dip in the Plunge, the Olympic-sized azure pool that was home to, well, 1932 Olympians. Secret: Go to the 5th floor and walk away from the locker room, turn left and go to the end of the hall. There you'll find a small window that looks into the pool where coaches sat to assess the dives of games-bound divers.

Something that has been in my thoughts lately is how hard it is to find craftsmanship, integrity, a balance between the feminine and masculine, and sharp taste and wit in one company (or in people in general). Dagg & Stacey, a line of sustainable clothing created and crafted out of Toronto, achieves this rare composition in their Fall/Winter 2011 line. And their military green blazer reminds me a bit of dear 'ol Phyllis Nefler who had nothing short of gumption and self-awareness—–rarities these days, too.

Quick Bite: Breakfast One

Gee whiz (more people should say that)! It's been quite a long time since I've whipped up a Quick Bite post seeing as how much I love food. Guess I've been running every which way and haven't paused to cook enough. But I remembered this past weekend to photograph the occasion, so here it goes! A healthy, delicious breakfast that may be fast to whip up, but is best eaten while leisurely reading the Sunday paper. Speaking of Sunday, what do you eat on weekend mornings (if you're reading out there)? 

Breakfast One

Mango Strawberry Smoothie

6-8 organic hulled strawberries

1.5 cups frozen mango

1.5 cups of Trader Joe's coconut milk beverage (in vanilla or plain)

1 cup blueberry (or honey) Greek yogurt

Wash the strawberries, throw all ingredients in blender and blend. Serve in a fun little cup with a whole strawberry (and a straw if you wish). 

Avocado Egg Toast

1 tsp. olive oil

1/4 sliced avocado

1 cage free egg

1 slice multi-grain toast

1 tsp. shaved parmigiano-reggiano

1/2 tsp. chopped chives

Salt and pepper to taste

Heat up small pan and add olive oil. Meanwhile, toast bread. To make sure pan is ready, add a drop of water and see if it sizzles. Crack egg carefully and cook either until top of yolk becomes white or until egg white cooks while yolk remains runny (depending on what you prefer). Top toast with egg, sliced avocado, cheese and chives. Salt and pepper to taste!

Something about Sunday afternoon at Pattern Bar reminds me of an afternoon in SoHo. The historical details are spot on, the windows large and open to the street and you feel like time stands still for a bit. It's peaceful and lovely without the crowds of the aforementioned New York neighborhood. Better yet, you can toast to fashion in the form of a darn good drink with names like The McQueen (sweet and tart), The Chanel (appropriately spicy) and The Gaultier (made with fresh watermelon) and munch on bites of South American and European- inspired dishes. We lingered perhaps too long, but it was a nice break from the downtown Emmy spectacle. 

Swell Sip: Earl's Cure

When you're under the weather, we all know you must drink plenty of water, sip on broth and cozy up to nurture your health. But should you be sick say through the weekend, I'd recommend throwing yourself (and any brave or silly soul who'll come near) a tea party spiked with a little bit of brandy. This SWELL SIP, Earl's Cure, is just for that purpose. Brew some quality Earl Grey tea, slice a few oranges and get out your tea set. Then pass around the brandy, triple sec and pot of honey and you're ready to toast to feeling better. If this sounds like I've planned this out, it's because it is exactly what I intend to do this evening along with eating a hearty supper and watching a good flick. Followed correctly, I should be bright-eyed by Monday. See you then!

It turns out that I am now living vicariously through my little brother, Diego, rather than him wishing he had my life. I guess a weekly Swell Sip and eating my way through Los Angeles can't compare to one year soaking up Europe. . . the architecture, the food and the people, Oktoberfest in Germany, studying in Spain and traipsing to Paris, Budapest or wherever the train takes you any weekend you choose. I didn't visit the beach once this summer, but with triple digits now I'm ready to take my market bag, pack a picnic and plant myself by the water. When you think of a classic pub, you might conjure up a Disneyfied version with the clink clink of pint glasses and gruff barkeepers tending with a barking frankness. But The Tommyfield, the newest project from BGW Design Studio, keeps the historical authenticity and a list of proper British ales while also serving up well-crafted sustainable fare in a gee-if-this-was-on-my-street-I'd-be-here-everyday environment. Think vintage metal light fixtures, sepia stools at the bar, and exposed brick.

The newest shelter from Mexico's Grupo Habita (who created Hotel Basico and Distrito Capital), with its glass exterior, Japanese-designed furniture, industrial Chelsea locale and rooftop pool, is both a hip hub for locals and a destination for the jet-set. Sure this weekend is booked, but you can always pop in for a bite and the view. Meanwhile, I'll be keeping up through their blog, a refreshing glimpse into the neighborhood and the lives of its inhabitants.

Truth: I've never set foot in Georgia. Sure, I've admired from afar the Forest City (that's Savannah to the rest of us) with its spanish moss and ancient oaks, and I feel like I've had a pint or two with the team at Scoutmob headquarters since I moonlight for them from my outpost, but nope, haven't been. Which is why when I found images of Atlanta's darling West Egg Cafe, with its library-meets-coffee shop decor, Fried Green Tomato Wraps and Build-Your-Own Biscuits(amazing!), I just about purchased a ticket. My first stop that way is Nashville this year (for Wedding No. 2), but perhaps we'll detour on the way home just to have breakfast at this Southern charmer.

Celebrate each year you survived this funny tradition (marvelous though it can be), I say! First stop with Mr. Ian would be (pocketbook aside) Leti 360°, an eco-friendly hermitage in the Himalayas, complete with stone walls, evening dinner by candlelight, and only the sound of the sweet little birds in the air. Though a grueling seven hour trek through the mountains from Dehli, isn't it worth it to spend time with your better half enjoying the epic views and the bucolic surroundings?

You're sensing a pattern here, I know. An obvious Spainophile, I promise this is my last post about tapas and flamenco for a bit. La Luna Negra, a Pasadena Spanish eatery with soaring ceilings and live music, is a good post-flea market stop (next Sunday). I can only recommend eating the alcachofa once in a (black) moon as it is deliciously dripping in warm butter and champagne, but once you've gandered at goods by foot down every aisle at the Rose Bowl, you can dive right in sans guilt. Tomorrow? My favorite birthday gifts both for others and yourself! In turning the big 2-9, I can't help but wonder where has the time gone? Part Baroque stone building (La Ermita)/modern wood cottage hotel(Kuba), part magnificent restaurant, it is the ultimate nomad's refuge in Matarraña, an untouched piece of Spain's desert. With a menu made up of sustainable and local offerings, a pool overlooking the landscape, and fireplaces made for reading next to, it is an oasis of relaxation. With a brother who is moving to Madrid in a few weeks and our tickets booked to visit him, I'm feeling simply giddy to spend some time exploring El Prado Museum and eating with the locals. In the meantime, I'll settle for great Spanish-inspired spots in Los Angeles to get a taste of the Iberian life. This is a STAY IN meant for a Thursday so as to see flamenco music, but if you must, save it for Saturday when you can catch the Happy Hour from 5pm-7pm at Tinto. ¡Buen viaje!

EAT: As the name suggests, Cobras y Matadors is ever-so-Spanish with its soft lighting and menu of modern tapas that ranges from roasted mushrooms with a sherry glaze to bacon-wrapped dates. For a well-rounded dinner, try the Oven Roasted Mussels, the Grilled Asparagus with manchego and almonds, Papas Fritas with aioli and a small bowl of the marinated olives. You can also bring your own rioja (or any wine you choose) for a small corkage fee.

DRINK: In true Andalucian style, cozy up at Tinto from 8pm-11pm for live flamenco and pitchers of sangria. More of a wine purist? Choose from their long list of Spanish varieties including toros from Zamora, rias baixas from Galicia or sparkling cavas from Catalunya. Finish with a plate of Churros con Chocolate a la Taza (housemade hot chocolate) or the Crema Catalana (caramel custard) and you'll feel like you escaped to Sevilla for the night.

STAY: Tucked above El Chavo, the unmarked El Tres Inn is tiny with only three rooms like a true European hideaway. But, it's both as quaint as can be with it's warm floral walls and interestingly quirky with its vintage decor and turntables. Book one of the rooms, throw on a robe and relax in the living area of these suites. It just doesn't feel like you're in Los Angeles anymore, does it?

Come Monday, I look forward to sharing all of my eatventures from the weekend, but I simply had to tell you about Sunday. We got a chance to visit The Gentle Barn, a rescue farm for abused, neglected and almost-slaughtered creatures, where we'll be volunteering once a month. While Ian followed King the llama around (they must be Peruvian soulmates) and petted Jewel the peacock, I made friends with Duchess (another llama) and Mario, a dapper and friendly silky chicken. Then we visited the sleepy pigs, walked with Yoda the emu and sat with Tinkerbelle and the other goats as the powwowed in the dirt. Inevitably, it made me rethink eating animals. Who wouldn't after meeting Buttercup the cow and Marcia (a turkey) who both just want to be hugged?

Going back to being blind as a bat. . . it connects to my feelings about camping. When I was young, camping meant dirt in my eyes (and if you have contacts, you know how this goes). It meant going to sleep cold and waking up hot (and blind). It meant having to pee on a tree (while finding my way through the dark). But somehow as I've gotten older, I've always romanticized the idea of camping. The s'mores! The wool blankets! The trek through the forest with a sweet little lantern! And while no true camper dislikes the dirt and the work of roughing it in the woods, for the rest of us there is the Far Meadow log cabin, a bucolic hideaway complete with the comforts of home—a French press, bicycles, running water–all under a classic tin roof in the heart of the Sierra National Forest. Living Architecture's The Dune House, the modern-meets-classic rental abode tucked away in Thorpeness, England, is without a doubt the idyllic place to find sweeping sea views, plenty of room to eat, drink and be merry (it's England, of course), and window soaking tubs to watch the sun set in the comfort of shelter. I know that many may prefer the sand and surf, but in my opinion this is how "beach" is done.

Riding down the PCH this weekend with the azure pacific ocean peppered with surfers to our left and the hills to our right, I couldn't think of one reason why I'd ever leave this sunny place. Cut to an afternoon sipping Arnold Palmers at the Malibu Country Mart and an evening with cheese (what would life be without it?) and Semler Rose at Malibu Wines, and I didn't feel it fair that I still had Sunday left to explore the Huntington Botanical Gardens. Summer in Southern California is pretty unbeatable, don't you think? (Lucy thinks so, too).

If you haven't already noticed, I have a soft spot for nature-inspired finds—a bear here, a porcupine there and an owl or two for good measure. And now that it's officially summer, I would like nothing more then to zip out to Dunton Hot Springs and hole up surrounded by fauna for a care-free week. Not going to happen.

However, to celebrate to the greener side of Los Angeles and get a taste of "nature", here is a STAY IN that will take you through the meadows, tramping through the forest and back to the plains in a weekend of good and grassy fun. Happy Summer Solstice!

EAT: Sit your tush down on a wooden bench and order up a "modern picnic" with a bit of Asian flair under the pitched roof of Culver City's A-Frame. For a true lazy day spin, order the Cracklin' Beer Can Chicken, the Dyn-O-Mite twiced-baked potato and a pint of the Atticus IPA straight out of Torrance. Finish up with a Thick Ass Ice Cream Sandwich and sigh. Hello June. 

DRINK: Warm up under the oaks of the very cabin-y Bigfoot Lodge West with a mason jar mug of the Toasted Marshmallow (vanilla vodka, butterscotch liquor, Frangelico, Bailey's Irish Creme and a flaming mound of gooey goodness) or a very feisty Sasquatch. A mix of Wild Turkey, ginger brandy, ginger ale and a touch of bitters, it's one drink bound to put a few hairs on your chest. 

STAY: With down-home rooms complete with plaid and rocking chairs, you'll forget you're in the heart of the Fairfax district when you burrow for the night at the Farmer's Daughter Hotel. Wake up for a sunny swim in the pool and a good ol' breakfast of Country Flapjacks or a Haystack Hussie at Tart followed by a leisurely walk around the Farmer's Market.

If this weather isn't made for staying in surrounded by books, coffee and movies, then I just am not certain I get the point of June Gloom. And so that is how we spent a Saturday (and no I didn't even put on shoes the entire day). Come Sunday, it was out to watch the sailboats in Santa Monica, stop in for a delicious lunch at my favorite little spot in all of L.A.—Bar Pintxo—and back downtown to share our neighborhood with friends. If you haven't yet been to Urbano Pizza Bar, stop in, won't you? The Wood Roasted Artichoke is perfection, the Funghi and Quattro Formaggi worth ordering for yourself and the interior welcoming. I've been twice already. The count could easily get to five by Friday. See you there.(And that's Rocky patiently waiting to continue his walk down the Promenade).

Good company and good food these past days! Another one for the books and a few tips learned. One, go to Bottega Louie early in the day as the light streams beautifully through the windows and your ears can rest. (Mr. Louie and I aren't OK for dinner as he happens to be quite loud after the sun goes down. We may be neighbors, but no). Also, after spending time at Malibu Wines again, I can't say how much I suggest you pack your picnic, roll your windows down and drive down Highway 1 to visit! Lastly, always keep open to the chance to meet fantastic people in this fine city, for they are out there. We ended Sunday in the company of SF-expats Junia Isabel and her other half Andres. Welcome to Los Angeles, new friends. (Oh, and that's our rescue pup Colette being as cute as ever. What a long way she's come).
